Centre drills and NC spotting drills for turning

A centre drill makes the start that keeps an ordinary twist drill or a lathe centre exactly where it belongs. Without it the drill walks across the surface and the hole ends up beside the mark. Because a centre drill is short and stout, it barely deflects and fixes the centre point before real material is taken away.

Two applications need to be kept apart. NC spotting drills to ISO 10898 with a 90 degree point set the starting point for drilling on a machine. Centre drills to DIN 332 with 60 degrees cut the centre hole in which a lathe centre bears, so a long shaft can be held between centres.

Choose the diameter to suit the hole that follows: a small spot for fine work, a larger one for heavier shafts and thick-walled material. HSS-E with cobalt holds its cutting edge better in tough and stainless steel.

The rest of the drilling and punching range follows on, as does the core drill bit for large through-holes.
